I found this book by chance in the library and I really loved it. It is a British mystery about a Scotland Yard's sergeant Jack Gibbons and his side kick a wealthy young man, Philip Bethancourt who is fascinated with figuring out who done it. Philip has a large dog, a Borzoi.called Cerberus who goes everywhere with him. You get a combination of gritty police work and high society.

Cassandra Chan has written 4 books so far and this was the last one. I decided to read the series in reverse
I was thinking about what content I want to put on this new blog. Do I want things to stay the same or can I change. I thought it would be fun to go back and see how I started this blog. My first post about frugal, healthy and simple living was on May1 2009. I was comparing the three. I feel those choices have become second nature to me now. I automatically think health, frugal and simple because those are important to me. What started out as an experiment has become a lifestyle.

I think I've learned a lot in the past few years. One of the things that has worked for me is to just not shop. My dd is a great shopper and finds all kinds of deals, but it's too much temptation for me. I'm better if I know what I need to purchase and I just look for that and nothing else.

Recently I had a little windfall, extra tax money and I've used part of it to invest in things that will save me money in the long run. I was able to look at the list of things I thought I wanted or needed and say I can either wait or do without it. I've found that a lot of things I think I want and need are passing desires that go away given time.

Also allowing myself certain luxuries makes it easier to say no to others. I allow myself to use my printer pretty liberally because I really enjoy having a hard copy of something I want to study and keep. So when I say no to something else I know that I'm making a choice based on what is most important to me.

My experiment with homemade cleaning products didn't always give the results I wanted and so I did switch back to buying organic products which are expensive, but I am choosy about which ones I decide to buy. Sometimes good enough is ok and sometimes it isn't.

I had visions of learning to walk more and use my car less. I do use my car less but I'm not walking more. This may just be wishful thinking on my part.

As far as cooking and stocking up with my diet changing so drastically I have focused more on learning to cook low carb and less on stocking up. I also found a lot of things that are frozen don't hold up very well. I ended up this year increasing my food budget so that I could buy organics and better quality food. I chose health over frugal in this case. I am going to reduce my budget a little as I am finding I'm doing pretty well and don't need as much money as I thought. I simple don't buy as much and really don't eat as much. Learning to stretch what you have is another frugal strategy.

I could go on and on about this subject and so I may continue to write about it on my new blog.

The new typepad blog is still being set up by my dd, bless her. :-) I did go back on google+ so that I can comment on those blogs on it and being no one could comment on mine before at least now the google+ people can and I can see my comments now. I'm not saying this was google's fault I'm not very teck literate, but I'm still not happy with them, enough said about that.
I've thought about doing this for a while. A new blog usually gets me excited again about my blog. My dd is making me a banner for my new blog. Today we talked about what I wanted and tried out some things. It's going to be so cute. It may take a while until I'm ready to post there, but I'll leave the link here when I'm ready. I do think you have to have an account at typepad to comment, but you don't have to have a blog. I think most of them are like that.

I realized I'm going to have to do Google+ just to be able to comment on those blogs that are using it, but my new blog will not be a part of it. It will just be so I can comment.
I've thought about doing this anyway. If it fixes itself anytime soon I'll stay. Sorry I didn't realize when I signed up for this that no one would be able to comment unless they sign up for Google+ too. Just letting off steam here.
I've been reading Gretchen's second book on happiness, "Happier at Home" by Gretchen Rubin. The first one was the Happiness Project.

She talks about doing things in 15 min. segments that she doesn't want to do. I decided to make my own list of things I could spend 15 mins. daily doing that I want to get to. Here is what I've started on-

Reading the books saved on my Cloud Reader.

Dusting

Reading about Abe Lincoln

I've got a list of possible things that I'm not ready to do yet like walking. I don't want start to many at once so this is my list for this week and I'll add to it as I go along.

Let see I really need to get back to my sewing, the garden needs work, the kitchen cabinets need to be wiped down.

She used her 15 mins. to get some scrapbooking done. She did it everyday until the job was done.

I'm having fun with a new place to save recipes. It's called Yumprint. You get a button that pops up whenever you are looking at a recipe. You can create cookbooks for catagories like dessert, salads. You can later print them up or print up a shopping list and you can follow other peoples recipes.
I decided to give it a try. I'm doing it right now. I've heard about it several times from different blogs and decided because I'm having some gum problems to give it a try. Keeper of the Home talks about here experience doing it here.

Last week I tried it with a gob of coconut oil. It is gross at first and I didn't want to do it again. I decided to try melting the oil first and that's what I did today, much better.

I'm Sonicaring my teeth and flossing and my gums are still not doing good. It may be the diabetes or just aging, but I've stepped up the amount of times I do both and got myself a Sonicare Airfloss. I got mine at Costco. I like it. It's easy to do, but I still floss the regular way too at least twice a day. The airfloss I can do anytime I eat and it's quick and easy.

Did you know making your bed can make you happier. That's what the Happiness Project says and I agree with her. I make my bed everyday. It makes me happy because it looks nice, but also because when I get back in it at night it isn't all messy. I also wash my sheets weekly.

The Happiness Project is a fun blog. This post is about 3 levels of fun- challenging, accommodating and relaxing. I never thought about it that way, but I can see how we need variety in our lives to be happy. Relaxing fun is good at times but you don't want to live there, there isn't much reward in it. So I'm thinking about the rewards of how I spend my time and energy and can I improve my happiness by improving how I spend my time.

Her blog inspires me to think about happiness and how to get it and keep it.
I've been working on organizing net stuff. I have a lot of passwords and user names and have them in a notebook, but it was hard to find the one I wanted. "Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
Psalm 23:6Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04994473436725815322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2930232515444412452.post-15438099442800359702013-04-06T17:09:00.002-07:002013-04-08T09:52:33.569-07:00Internet Inspiration and Motivation on Cooking Real FoodThis post got accidentally posted on Saturday while I was trying to edit it, so this is the edited version for anyone that got the first one.

One of the things I love about the Internet is getting inspiration and motivation from what other people are doing.

Lately I've been following Granny's Vital Vitals. She talks about real food and a traditional diet like granny ate.

For those that struggle with cooking she has her Granny Plan, to help them start to cook from scratch and to cook real food. One of the things I benefited from her writing was the idea that granny was a plain cook. We have so many choices now that it can be overwhelming. Some of us feel dinner has to be a gourmet feast every day and that good plain food is boring. She encourages us to focus instead on cooking real food in a healthy way and become very familiar with some basic recipes. These are your go to recipes that you don't have to think too hard about.

The reason this spoke to me is because we are foodies. It all started with Julia Child when I was raising a family. I loved all that but now I'm tired and cooking can be a chore sometimes. Many of us just get tired of cooking after so many years of it. So I struggle to feed myself at times and settle for prepared meals from the grocery deli or junk food even though I know it isn't frugal or healthy.

With all we are hearing about GMO's I really want to know what I'm eating and unless I'm buying and cooking my own food I won't know. So the idea of keeping it simple and having those go to recipes in my back pocket sounds like it would help me resist the easy way out when I'm tired. A lot of my favorite recipes don't appeal now, so I need some lighter and easier ones that fit in my diabetes diet.

Another point she makes, that spoke to me, is not to feel guilty if you can't do it all. It's impossible for most of to buy all our meat grass fed and all our veggies organic and all our dairy and chickens pastured. So you have to just try and continue to one by one start to change to better choices and don't worry about it when you have to compromise as long as you are making progress in the right direction. Her Granny Plan shows you how to do that. That has freed me up to not have that all or nothing mind set, but to do the best I can and know that I'm working on it. I do have those perfectionist tendencies.

Even though I am a granny she is talking about my grandmother's era, not mine. She was Portuguese and I remember how we all loved it when she made her Portuguese specialties. In my mother's era they used a lot of canned foods. I remember being forced to eat canned spinach and peas yuck. Even though I've been cooking for many years each new season of our life brings new challenges. It's never too late to learn. These may not be your issues, but she has a lot more to say, so check out her blog.

A rainy day today. I just finished this book of Anne Perry's. I first read her Christmas stories and liked those so decided to see what else she had written. This is part of the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series in Victorian England. This one is all about corruption in the police department and covers an interesting subject. I enjoyed it, so now I want to start at the beginning of the series.

April is here. I can't have flowers in the house and so I got this little plant with pink leaves. It's so cute. The pot and the plant came from Walmart.

I'm starting to think about the garden. I'm not sure if I'm going to do a lot of vegs. this year. It seems to cost more than I reap.

I am working on my new perennial bed that I put in last year. I found a cute bird bath at Walmart and I'm working on filling in the bed. A lot of the plants died in the middle of it last year and I'm not sure if the ground is polluted or if the sprinkler just wasn't reaching that spot, so I put the bird bath there, but I'm trying to figure out how to deal with the rest of it. I can't afford to spend a lot on plants and plan to move some of what I have around. I have another bed I want to redo and so may move some of those plants into the perennial bed.

It's a little early yet to put in frost sensitive plants, but I sure would like a little more color. I'm thinking about adding some colorful pots. I'm not in a hurry, I want take time to try different things.

A few years ago I made up an emergency tote bag for the car and a small backpack. I decided it was time to go through them again and get new food and see if I wanted to change any of the items in them.

We were told for our area that we would probably have to stay in our homes in a emergency, but you try to cover the possibility of having to leave so I made up a backpack to carry and a tote for the car.

The idea of the backpack was something you could grab and carry that would be short term use. I had some personal hygiene items in it, some water, beef jerky and protein bars. A set of clean underwear. I was kind of laughing as I looked at this stuff and wondered would I really care about personal hygiene and clean underwear. I also realized with my age and a bad back I doubt I could really carry this thing very far. The car tote was for more food and clothing.

I'm replacing some of the medicine and foods that are outdated, but I think I'm doing it more because I think I should than because I think it will really be all that useful. The thing is I don't know what would be better.

I've let my emergency pantry kind of get used up. I have some dehydrated foods and plenty of stuff in my freezers, but I need to work on getting some more canned items, so that is next.

Do you have an emergency plan, and do you update it once in a while? Of course prayer is the most important plan, but I believe in taking some action also. My faith will always be in God's plan and His care.

I'm still working on my decluttering list and this was on that list, so one more area done.

I just finished reading Dying to Read by Lorena McCourtney. She is a Christian writer, here is her page that tells about her books. I loved the Ivy Malone series. This book is about a young woman who is out of work and helps her uncle a PI as a temporary job and she gets entangled in a murder mystery. It's cute and my library has the second book in the series on order, Dolled Up to Die. The series is called the Cate Kinkaid Files.
