Berry Season and Homemade Yogurt

I love berries and I try to enjoy them as much as I can while they are in season. One of the ways I really like to eat them is with Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is a little pricey so I made my own. It's not thick like the store bought but it tastes wonderful. It is made with half heavy cream. My dd showed me how to do it. There are lots of recipes out there for making yogurt so I won't go into that, but the heavy cream keeps it from being really tart. I sweeten mine with agava. The recipe below uses lemon yogurt and I thought that sounded good so I added some lemon zest to mine this morning. I think orange would be good too. If you want it to be thick like Greek yogurt you strain it. I didn't do that because I like it the way it is.

I don't eat desserts that have flour or sugar in them, so no strawberry shortcake. I've been using Agava which is kind of like honey, so if I can figure out how to substitute it in a recipe I do that. Again for me simple is best. I really like my berries plain with a little yogurt. I've seen recipes for strawberry ice tea. I've even seen salad dressings with mashed berries in them. Those sound interesting but I think I can enjoy the berries best when they are the star and unadorned. Raspberries and blueberries are my favs.

One of the things I do like to do with yogurt and berries or other fruit is to add granola or trail mix, just to add a little crunch. Here is a recipe that sounds interesting. I would like to make my own granola and trail mix next.

I still think the best tasting berry is the one you just picked.

I used a crockpot wrapped in a towel as an insulated container for the yogurt to set up in and it worked very well. I'm also wondering what else I can use this yogurt on it's so good. Linda

You've convinced me Linda! I'm going to start making yogurt again. I think I'll like made the way you described.

I love berries in yogurt. And I completely agree with your statement: "...the best tasting berry is the one you just picked".

I don't know about Greek yogurt so will have to check it out. I buy plain yogurt and add honey and berries. It makes a nice shake like drink. I signed up to be a follower (enjoyed reading your older posts). We have recently retired so have to be very careful about our spending. I am going to list your blog as one I am following.
