When I saw Paula's similar container planted with lovely flowers, I though I have one of those that I've been meaning to plant for a long time. Then she asked me if I was doing a winter garden and I said no. I asked my dd what we can grow here in the winter and she suggested garlic and chard. So that's what I did. I got "bright lights chard" for the middle with 12 garlic around the edge. I'm so excited that next fall I'll be able to harvest my own garlic and in the mean time I can enjoy my chard and when the garlic sprouts I can use the green sprouts. I hope next year to expand my porch garden and I'm waiting to see how well they do in this container. I would also like to learn more about what you can grow here in the winter and early spring. I learned that they send all the seeds back and don't have starts once fall gets here, so you have to be quick to get them or order from catalogues.

We can't have a winter garden here. The winters are just too brutal, but I love the idea of it. I should think it would be very economical, since all the seeds would be deeply discounted this time of year.

Your container garden looks beautiful! I am so glad you can grow chard and garlic. You will enjoy those all winter. I love to chop chard up and add it to soup. I am glad you are planning on expanding your porch garden, I know it will provide you with a lot of joy and good fresh food! Can you grow lettuces? We can grow lettuce, chard, and many other things here through the winter that don't do well in the heat of summer. I know your climate is colder, but I think lettuces would do well if protected when you have a freeze.
